Popayan is a city of colonial architecture. It's surrounded by the hills, mountains and volcanoes. Colonial houses abound where work museums, universities and schools. On its territory there are seven indigenous peoples, the original inhabitants of these regions. Four of them still speak their ancestral language. These indigenous peoples are the precursors of indigenous political and social organizations in Colombia to establish the first Regional Indigenous Council -CRIC in the country.
In the vicinity of Popayán is Puracé Natural Park with lush vegetation and wildlife. As the hot springs of Kokonuco. And in the region the archaeological remains of Tierradentro and St. Augustine are there too.
